The Best Bed Bug Treatments

14 February 2011 423 views No Comment

Bed Bugs were once thought to be found in unsanitary conditions, places like the slums, dirty mattress, and generally unclean areas. In truth, bed bugs can inhabit any place where they can feed on human blood. News sources are actually telling us that there is an epidemic of bed bugs spreading across the country. These bugs are no respecter of persons. They will just as easily inhabit the beds of the wealthy and elite as poor. They travel easily from hotel room mattresses to clothing, from visitors to sofas and carpets. It only takes one to begin an infestation and one can live a long time. The problem is getting rid of them once they enter your home.

Bed Bugs Treatment

Bed bugs treatment is possible, but it takes persistence and patience. You first need to positively identify the insects you need to treat as bed bugs. There are other kinds of biting insects that would need different kinds of treatment.

There are three kinds of treatment for bed bugs. One is Thermal Remediation. This is a heat treatment which kills bed bugs in all stages, eggs, nymphs, and adults. Two is a Cryonite freeze technology. This uses very cold temperature and is a very safe treatment for humans. Both thermal remediation and cryonite treatment are costly and need to be done by professionals.

The least expensive treatment and the one that has been used most often and for a long time is chemical treatment. This works best if you start in the early stages of infestation. Whichever treatment you choose, it will take three or four applications. Bed bugs can live over a year without food, and eggs are difficult to reach with treatment. There is a product called Steri-fab and also a Bedlam Bed Bugs Spray that claims to kill the eggs, but this treatment only lasts one month, so reapplication is necessary. Other furniture in the home besides the bed should be treated. Also a product called Mother Earth Dust is good to apply around the room and into electrical sockets.

Care should be taken when taking any clothing from the room or bed linens from the bed. The same basket used to remove clothing should not be used to bring back cleaned articles unless well treated. If it is determined that a mattress is too infested for treatment, care also should be taken that the infestation doesn’t spread. The mattress should be slashed or otherwise defaced so someone in need of a mattress doesn’t somehow get a hold of it and use it before it gets to a garbage dump.

Bed Bugs Treatment on Skin

Bug bed bites are uncomfortable and itchy. Home treatment is generally effective. Using Calamine lotion, or anti itch lotions or salves are the best treatment. A cold pack can be soothing as well. Another effective treatment for bug bites is to apply a hot, wet washcloth to the bite as soon as possible. It should be as hot as the skin can handle. If excessive scratching has opened the skin, there is the danger of infection. Should infection develop, you should see your doctor.

Bed Bugs Treatment Cost

Earlier mentioned products can be ordered from Pestmall.com. Bedlam Bed Bug Insecticide Spray costs $16.50. The market price is about $20. Mother Earth Dust Powder is $10.75 with market price being about $18. Because you will need to treat more than once, you may need several of each. For cost of the thermal remediation or cryonite treatment, you should call a local pest control company for a quote.

Bed Bugs Treatment Home Remedy

If you are a do it yourself kind of person and decide to use a bed bugs treatment home remedy, remember that time, diligence and patience will be needed for success. You will need to use chemicals, so do the research and use the chemicals that will ensure the safety of your family.
